Mangakino Area School students will receive a big boost with their reading this week thanks to Mighty River Power.
The Waikato hydro-generation company is providing 300 new reading books for the school, through the Books In Homes programme.
“It’s a great way to help kids who may not do a lot of reading to get into the habit in an enjoyable way. Mighty River Power has a strong association with the Books in Homes programme and we’ve seen its value in helping kids learn to love reading,” said Mike Stanley, Mighty River Power Corporate Affairs Manager.
Each of the school’s 125 junior school students will receive two books in a special school assembly on Wednesday September 12 at 11:00am.
Special guest Tui Katene, a young New Zealand bodybuilder who has represented New Zealand internationally, will present the books to children with Mike Stanley.
In total, the school will receive $3,000 worth of new books, a cost jointly covered by Mighty River Power and Books In Homes.
Books in Homes was started by New Zealand children’s author Alan Duff, to provide books through corporate sponsorship to primary school children.
The programme is designed to benefit children who don’t read regularly or whose families may not have many books at home for the children to read.
Mighty River Power now sponsors books for three Waikato schools – Waipa School, Richmond Primary School and Mangakino Area School.
“We’re pleased to be able to contribute to the education of young people in our local area,” said Mike Stanley.
