Mighty River Power Premier Partner of 2010 World Rowing Championships

The Organising Committee of the 2010 FISA World Rowing Championships has announced Mighty River Power as a Premier Partner.

The announcement came at a ‘One Year To Go’ celebration in Cambridge, marking the 12-months until the Championships begin in Karapiro. Mighty River Power is also the exclusive sponsor of the Karapiro Crew, the Championships’ official volunteer team.

The Karapiro Crew will be made up of more than 500 volunteers who will play a major role in delivering the Championships. Hundreds of people from all over New Zealand and internationally have already registered their interest in joining the Karapiro Crew, and the event organisers are keen to build a world class volunteer team.

”The Karapiro Crew will be a way for local people, and others, to really get involved with this exciting and unique event”, says Fraser Whineray, Mighty River Power’s General Manager of Generation.

”We are proud to be providing support to a team of people dedicating their time and skills to make this event a real success”.

Volunteer recruitment and training will be ongoing between now and mid 2010.

The Championships will be based at Mighty River Domain on the edge of Lake Karapiro, recognised internationally as an outstanding stretch of water for competitive rowing.

As operators of the Waikato Hydro System, including the Karapiro Power Station, Mighty River Power will support the event in more ways than sponsorship alone - working closely with event organisers to manage water flows and deliver optimum rowing conditions on Lake Karapiro.

“It’s great to see Lake Karapiro being used for such a high profile international event – showcasing the wonderful natural resources and recreation facilities we have within the Waikato region,” says Mr Whineray.

“We are pleased to be able to support the Championships at multiple levels and look forward to our involvement with event organisers and the Waipa district over the next year.”

Mighty River Power is a long standing sponsor of Rowing New Zealand, and has a long association supporting the sport and rowing events at Lake Karapiro.

”Having the World Rowing Championships return to Karapiro for the first time since 1978 is exciting.

“It will be great to see our rowers competing at an international level, with a home crowd at the Mighty River Domain. We wish them all the best for the next 12 months of training and look forward to some great results in 2010”, says Mr Whineray.
