Mighty River Power and Waipa District Council today announced a significant sponsorship partnership that will see the Karapiro Lake Domain re-named Mighty River Domain.
The Mighty River Domain sponsorship is for an initial period of ten years and will support Waipa District Council’s development programme for a world-class event centre and community space on the shores of Lake Karapiro. The development programme currently includes plans for a new and enhanced community centre, upgrades to roading infrastructure, and new public facilities such as toilet blocks and car parking.
General Manager for Generation Fraser Whineray said the company was delighted to have the opportunity to promote the recreational and leisure benefits of the Waikato Hydro System to the wider community.
“We’re excited to be working with the council on a project that will be of such positive benefit to the local community. Mighty River Domain will be a community space of international standing and will be showcased when Lake Karapiro hosts the Rowing World Championships in 2010,” said Mr Whineray.
The Domain at Lake Karapiro is a valued community resource covering an area of 20 hectares. It provides for a variety of sporting and recreational activities, including rowing, waka ama, water skiing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing and triathlons. It is also home to several sports clubs and is a popular venue for school groups, corporate activities and the wider community.
