Maraetai

The two Maraetai stations have a combined capacity of 360MW - the largest output from any lake on the Waikato River.

The station also plays a key role in being able to provide ancillary services such as voltage and frequency control. Generating units in Maraetai II have sophisticated frequency control and time-error correction equipment, allowing the powerhouse to respond to changes on the national grid in order to maintain supply consistency.

Maraetai has two powerhouses sited in a deep gorge only 11 km downstream from Whakamaru power station. This short distance between the stations means that water leaving Whakamaru quickly joins Lake Maraetai. The scenic location of Lake Maraetai, close to both Tokoroa and Mangakino townships, makes it a popular spot for a wide range of recreational pursuits.
