Hydro Stations
The Waikato Hydro System, at the heart of our generation portfolio, is among the world's most efficient. A centralised control room in Hamilton monitors, controls and co-ordinates in real time the output of each station on the river.
The generation potential of the river has been efficiently harnessed with the eight dams from Aratiatia to Karapiro sited to allow water to flow directly from one station into the lake formed by the dam of the next station.
With our focus on running an integrated generation system, Mighty River Power is able to make the best use of all the water flowing into Lake Taupo and the Waikato River. By using operational know-how built up over many years, combined with a range of modern technologies, we can maximise the efficiency of each of the 39 turbines that comprise the Waikato Hydro System.
We also continue to invest in the future of the Waikato Hydro System through on-going upgrade projects and the introduction of new technology.
