Geothermal

Mighty River Power has geothermal operations that reflect world-class capability and the company is undertaking a significant geothermal exploration and expansion programme - the largest in New Zealand in the past twenty years.

Geothermal energy represents approximately 18% of Mighty River Power’s total generation production and it is expected to represent over 30% by the end of the decade. Mighty River Power’s geothermal development programme is part of the company’s strategy of looking at a wide range of renewable generation options to meet New Zealand’s growing demand for electricity.

Mighty River Power is currently active in three geothermal fields - at Rotokawa, Mokai and Kawerau - and significant potential exists for further development within the Taupo volcanic zone.

All Mighty River Power’s geothermal power stations and development projects involve partnerships with Maori, reflecting the fact that Maori groups generally own the land that sits across the top of the resource and are actively participating in the utilisation of the resource.
