Renewable Energy
More than 90 percent of Mighty River Power’s annual energy production in the past financial year was generated from renewable sources. However, demand for energy increases every year. If we are to avoid the increased use of thermal sources - and their associated greenhousegas (GHG) emissions – we must continue to develop new sources of clean, renewable energy.
Geothermal in particular will play an important role in reducing our GHG emissions. It is the only form of commercialised renewable energy that does not depend on the weather and can therefore displace or defer the need for new thermal generation plants. Mighty River Power is investing more than a billion dollars into a geothermal exploration and development programme and is well on track to have 500MW of geothermal generation capacity by 2012. We also have an active wind development programme and are in the process of consenting two wind farms – one in the Turitea Reserve near Palmerston North and one at Long Gully in Wellington through our partner Windflow Technology Ltd. Learn more about our wind development programme.
